Adhesive: The glue substance on the back of a pressure-sensitive material for adhesion to surfaces (example: removable, permanent, etc).

Backscore: A slit in the liner of a pressure sensitive label, used to assist in the removal of the facestock from the liner.
Bar code (UPC): One of several machine-readable codes used at retail, manufacturing, and shipping levels to identify products.
Bleed: When the image runs beyond the cut edge of a label.
Butt cut: A label made with square corners and no spacing between labels.
“Booh yah!”: see “sweeeet!”
Color changes: Refers to the wash-up and changing of ink on press within a production run.
Color matches: Refers to the mixing of ink to match a specific spot color (example: PMS, customer supplied sample).
Copy: The printed image and/or wording on a label.
Corner Radius: The measurement that refers to the roundness or arch of the corner of a label.
Die: The tool that cuts the shape of the label.
Die line: The outline of the die cut, illustrated on contract proofs.
Face material: The top layer of a label construction sometimes also called the substrate (example: paper, foil, mylar, vinyl, etc)
Fanfold: Labels with perforations, folded into stacks.
Fanfold length: The distance between folds; also determines the number of labels per fold.
Flexo (Flexography): A printing process utilizing flexible printing plates and roll-fed materials, to be finished in roll or sheet form.

Four-color process: The printing process utilizing 4 inks (magenta, cyan, yellow, and black) to produce a variety of graphics and images.
Gradient: The transition of a color or image from light to dark or dark to light.
Halftones: The use of dots to construct an image.
Lamination: A thin clear film laminated to a face material to protect image from the environment.
Plate: A piece of flexible rubber that tranfers ink to the substrate on a printing press to produce an image.
PMS (Pantone Matching System): An universal color standard, indicated by a number given to each specific color. (Pantone is also the name of our company cat)
Registration: The correct placement and fit of all colors and copy within a label.
Screens: Any dot pattern used to produce various concentrations of color such as process, halftones, or gradients.
Smile: A physical effect resulting from a direct partnership with Niagara Label.
Spot Color: Any color used for printing that has been custom mixed for a job (example: PMS), as opposed to 4 color process.
Substrate: Any material being converted on a printing press (example: gloss, matte, film, etc).
“Sweeeet!”: A common verbal response after receiving your first order from Niagara Label.
Tool/Tooling: Refers to cutting dies, as well as other mechanicals (example: cylinders, sheeters, blades, punches, etc)
UV (Ultraviolet) Coating: A chemical coating applied and cured by ultraviolet light to a face material to protect image from the environment.
Waste (Matrix): The non-usable face material around the die cut edges of a label that is stripped away and discarded. |
